Landscapes
Land as painters from China to the Hudson River saw it. Mountains in mist on Chinese silk, Ruisdael's wheat fields under a Dutch sky, Van Gogh's cypresses, Claude's Roman countryside in the evening light, the Barbizon woods, Kensett's Lake George, and Hiroshige's rivers and temple groves. Land as a mood, whichever way it was painted.
As a puzzle
Soft, tonal and beautiful, with foliage and water giving the eye plenty to read. The broad skies are the gentle challenge, and the ink landscapes leave whole passages of bare silk to the mist, so drop the count a little when the blue or the white gets lonely.
