Artist of the week
Sunny grass and a circus at night
Georges Seurat
Georges Seurat, a French painter who built his pictures from small touches of colour, from the late 1870s to 1888. A mower in a white shirt swings his scythe through gold wheat, a gardener bends over the earth in yellow sunlight, two men pole a boat on the bright Seine, and people rest on the riverbank in a study for A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. Pale trunks rise from green flecks at Pontaubert, and a trombone player stands on a night stage of tiny dots in Circus Sideshow.
As a puzzle
Small strokes and dots everywhere, so the colours blur at every edge. Start from the clear shapes: the white shirts of the mower and the gardener, the boat and its two men, the dark figures on the grass, the trombone player’s pointed hat. The Forest at Pontaubert is green flecks almost all over, Landscape at Saint-Ouen is soft grey-green, and Circus Sideshow is a dim violet haze. Keep the count moderate.
