Rivers, boats and apple blossom

Charles-François Daubigny

Charles-François Daubigny, a French painter of rivers and riverbanks, from the 1850s to the 1870s. Stone houses and cows by still water at dusk in Optevoz, ducks on a dark river under an orange sunset, a stream under tall thin trees leading to a sunlit house, a woman washing at the edge of the Oise among turning trees, fishing boats beached on the sand at Etaples, an orchard in white and pink blossom with cows grazing in the shade, and a wide grey river under big white clouds.

As a puzzle

Most of these are half sky and half water, with a band of trees and houses between. Start from that band: the roofs and cows at Optevoz, the boats and masts at Etaples, the white blossom. The pale skies and the smooth river water are slow, and the sunlit stream is green from top to bottom. Apple Blossoms takes a higher count; keep the rivers moderate.

A good size here: 40–200 pieces.
