Lakes, ruins and weather on paper
British Watercolour
Watercolour in Britain from the late 1700s to the middle of the 1800s, when painters walked the Lakes, Wales and Scotland and carried their paper on to Italy. Towne’s pale trees leaning over the lake at Peamore Park, Abbott’s waterfall at Inveraray, Varley’s Harlech Castle across the sands, Girtin’s river at Norwich, Cozens’s Villa Lante above Rome, and Cox’s Dover pier against an orange evening sea.
As a puzzle
Soft and luminous rather than busy. The buildings, the waterfall and the trees give you edges to work from; the skies are thin washes over paper that change slowly from one piece to the next, and some sheets keep a band of bare paper at the edge. Sort the sky by tone, build the land first, and keep the count moderate.
A good size here: 50–200 pieces.
