Britain, from Gainsborough to Turner
British Painting
British painting from the 1760s to the 1860s, a century of portraits, horses and weather. Gainsborough's cottage children gathering wood, Reynolds's Lady Smith with her children, Stubbs's hunter held by a groom, Landseer's deerhound, Constable's Salisbury Cathedral framed by trees, and Turner's whalers lost in the spray. Soft skies, silk and a good deal of cloud.
As a puzzle
Mostly a gentle build. The silks and the dogs' coats give the portraits plenty to sort by, and the horses and hounds have hair that runs a clear way. The feathery trees and hazy skies behind the sitters go more slowly, and Turner is the exception to everything: his whalers are nearly all spray and mist, so give that picture a low count and a long evening.
