Solid and unsentimental
Gustave Courbet
Paintings with weight to them. A woman in the waves, a fishing boat, village girls out walking, a parrot on a wrist. Thick paint, worked with the knife as much as the brush.
As a puzzle
He builds his surfaces in slabs of tone, so pieces come apart by value more than by line. Rock, sea and cloth all reward looking at the shape first.
A good size here: 80–250 pieces.
