Roads, riverbanks and moving sky

Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley in the small towns along the Seine and the Loing, from the 1870s to the 1890s. The suspension bridge at Villeneuve-la-Garenne, chestnut trees along the river with a carriage in their shade, the road from Versailles to Louveciennes under a grey sky, a snowy street at Moret, a red-roofed house on the road to Saint-Mammès, and a meadow at Sahurs gone gold in the morning sun. Sky over almost all of it, and the light changing in it.

As a puzzle

A friendly middle ground. The houses, the bridge and the rows of trees give firm lines to start from, and the people on the roads are small but clear. The skies are wide and broken into soft clouds, and the snow at Moret and the gold field at Sahurs are long stretches of nearly one colour. Keep the count moderate, or go higher for the bridge and the chestnut avenue.

A good size here: 50–200 pieces.
