Painted rooms near Pompeii
Roman Wall Painting
Walls from two Roman villas that Vesuvius buried in the year 79, painted about a hundred years before: the villa of Publius Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale and an imperial villa at Boscotrecase. The bedroom from Boscoreale, painted on every wall with towns and colonnades, columns and red panels that open the walls into make-believe architecture, a garland hung with masks, a woman with a lyre in a carved chair, another holding a shield, and Perseus freeing Andromeda in a blue-green sea.
As a puzzle
Big fields of Pompeian red, black and green, with the life in the borders: columns, garlands, painted mouldings. Start from the figures and the straight lines of the architecture, then fill the colour fields, which are cracked and worn enough to give each piece a little texture. The two black walls from Boscotrecase are slow, so keep those low; the bedroom and the seated women take a moderate count well.
A good size here: 40–160 pieces.
