Devotion, in gold and mineral colour
Sacred Art
Pictures made to be prayed in front of. Botticelli's last communion of Saint Jerome, Fra Filippo Lippi's Madonna between two angels, El Greco's Christ carrying the cross, Tibetan thangkas in deep red and green, Guanyin seated on a lotus throne in Korea, Radha crossing a river to meet a sage, and Bodhidharma staring out of a Japanese scroll. Several faiths, one purpose.
As a puzzle
Rich and patient. Gold grounds, haloes and bright robes give the eye clear places to begin, and the thangkas are dense the whole way across. Gold itself is the slow part, since one gilded piece looks much like the next, and so are the dark grounds behind the later altarpieces. A middling count suits most of these.
