Spanish painting across four hundred years, from small gold-ground panels of about 1496 to a masked ball in 1909. El Greco's Christ under the cross, a queen by Velázquez in a vast grey dress, and five by Goya, among them the boy in red with his magpie on a string. Dark grounds, and very little between you and the sitter.
As a puzzle
The dark one. Goya and El Greco set their people against near black, so a good third of the table is shadow you sort by touch rather than by colour, and the faces and the few bright clothes carry the rest. Keep the count low and it stays a pleasure. Eleven of the thirteen are taller than they are wide.
