Panels, paper and the woodblock

Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg, about 1505 to 1523, in paint and in print. Saint Anne with a hand on Mary’s shoulder while the Child sleeps, Christ in blue and red, blessing, the world in his hand, the Virgin and Child against the dark, and a young woman’s profile on green paper. Then the prints: his coat of arms, an open door under spread wings, a knot pattern for embroidery, and two woodcut sheets from the Arch of Honor for the emperor Maximilian.

As a puzzle

Two kinds of evening. The paintings go by colour: Anne’s white headcloth, Mary’s red, Christ’s blue, each on a plain dark or green ground that comes last. The prints are black lines on pale paper, the same grey all over, so you follow the lines from piece to piece: feathers, arches, a knot that repeats around its circle. The drawing is a few faint lines on bare green paper. Keep the count moderate throughout.

A good size here: 50–200 pieces.
