Colour with a pulse

Eugène Delacroix

Delacroix across forty years, from a student's study of a model to one of his last pictures. Christ asleep in the boat while the storm breaks, Rebecca carried off on horseback from a burning castle, Ovid in exile among the Scythians, his aunt Madame Riesener, and a basket of flowers tipped over in a park. Colour that moves even when nothing else does.

As a puzzle

Warm colour and dark water. A red cloak, a horse's flank or a spill of flowers sorts itself, and his brushwork runs in a direction you can follow. The stormy sea and the dark grounds of the portraits are the slow part, so give those pictures a moderate count.

A good size here: 50–200 pieces.
