Small sitters and games
Children
Children painted by people who clearly liked them. Goya's boy in red with his magpie and his cats, Homer's schoolboys playing snap the whip, Madame Roulin holding up her baby, Rubens's small son at his mother's side, Gainsborough's cottage children gathering wood, Utamaro's mother and children by a screen, and Fragonard's two sisters. Few of them sat still for long.
As a puzzle
A warm, steady build. Faces, bright clothes and toys give you plenty of places to start, and the games outdoors are busy right to the edges. The slow parts are the ones you would expect: a dark studio ground behind a portrait, or a wide field of grass under a big sky.
