Venetiaanse schilderkunst
Venetië in zijn laatste eeuw als republiek, geschilderd voor de reizigers die het kwamen zien en voor de families die er woonden. Het San Marcoplein van Canaletto, de Rialto en de Salute aan de overkant van het water uit het atelier van Guardi, gemaskerde spelers in de Ridotto, de kleine kamers van Longhi waar een brief aankomt of bezoek binnenkomt, en de plafondschetsen van Tiepolo vol goden en wolken. Helder licht, bleke steen en een lucht boven alles.
Als legpuzzel
De stad legt zichzelf, de lucht vraagt geduld. Ramen, zuilen, luifels en gondels geven bijna elk stukje van een stadsgezicht iets om te plaatsen, en dan komt een wijde, bleke lucht die je sorteert op de kleinste verandering in toon. De kamers van Longhi zijn donkerder en dichterbij, en de wolken van Tiepolo zijn zacht van begin tot eind. De meeste zijn breder dan hoog.
