From dusk to moonlight
Night
The hours after the light goes. Hiroshige's geese crossing the full moon and his night rain on Lake Biwa, Harunobu's woman looking at plum blossom in the dark, Dahl's Copenhagen harbour by moonlight, a ship under the moon at sea, Rousseau's forest in the last of the sunset, and a moon among clouds brushed in ink. Moons, clouds and a great deal of deep blue.
As a puzzle
Beautiful and slow. The moon, its path across the water and the bright edges of cloud give you your first pieces, and then comes a great deal of dark blue and black that only edge shape will sort. The woodblock prints are the kindest of these, with flat colour and firm outlines even at night, so start there and keep the count low for the oil paintings.
